Our Vision

Adhering to the ideals of Reform Judaism, become the Southeast's preeminent midsize congregation for the learning of Jewish traditions, history and Torah in a spiritual environment that encourages open-mindedness, a sense of belonging and Tikkun Olam.

Our Mission

  • To be democratic. To eliminate the last vestige of authoritarian rule whether carried out overtly or in secret.
  • To be egalitarian. There is no "class structure" at Beth HaTephila; nor is there a patriarchy.
  • To be inclusive rather than exclusive; willing to accept all who wish membership as full members.
  • To be aware of and cater to intergenerational interaction.
  • To make provisions for mixed marriages, converts and interfaith marriages.
  • To become socially involved and not isolated.
  • To be generous - generous not only in the willingness of members to fund the activities of BHT, but generous in the desire of congregants to share their time, energy and talent.
  • To be committed to ongoing education throughout the life of all congregants.
  • To persist in its concern for social justice - for congregants, in the community, and for the global community.
  • To be experimental. Judaism serves us most poorly when our liturgy and Jewish lifestyle petrify. It serves us best when we are willing to experiment, evaluate, change - or retain.
