The
Torah Mantles

In
March 2000 the Dave family decided to honor their uncle and brother
Hyman Dave on the occasion of his 90th birthday by sponsoring a
new set of four torah mantles.
These
mantles were designed, woven and assembled by Judaica artist Phyllis
Kantor of Portland, Oregon. The design features the mountains and
colors of our region and bears the hebrew inscription "Esa
enai el heharim meayin yavo ezri" - "I lift my eyes to
the mountains whence comes my help", the opening words of the
121st Psalm.

The
mantles were dedicated at a shabbat ceremony in December 2000. Shown
here from left to right are Jerry Dave, Hyman's sister Rosalie Schreier,
and honoree Hyman Dave.
Note
that the breast plates have been removed from the scrolls and hung
in the ark. This is so that the design is not covered and to protect
the mantles.
The
'Dave' mantles will be used at all ordinary times of the year. At
the three 'pilgrimage' festivals - Pesach, Shavuot and Succot -
they will be replaced with the gold 'Schochet' mantles; and of course
during the High Holidays white mantles will be used.
